Working Notes

The rule was written down. That's why it kept breaking.

I keep a document of rules for how my system is supposed to work — closer to two hundred of them now, each written the day something went wrong so it wouldn't go wrong again. For a long time I thought that number was the achievement. It was closer to the problem.

It holds what I can't afford to leak, it reads messages from people I've never met, and it can send. Any one of those is fine. All three at once is a different animal.
For a long time my AI was brilliant and useless in exactly the same way. It could reason through almost anything, and it forgot me every single morning.
Someone asked me recently what I'd built. I opened my mouth and realized I couldn't point at anything — and that turned out to be the most important thing I've learned.
Everyone's asking which model is the smartest. It's the wrong question, and it's quietly costing people a lot of time.
